The mighty and iconic Hohe Munde mountain watches over the town of Telfs in the Inntal Valley. At 2,662m, it is popular with both hikers and rock climbers. Visitors with a passion for plays will be interested to know that it is home to the Tiroler Volksschauspiele theatre.
Telfs itself has a population of around 14,000 and is, after Innsbruck and Kufstein, the third largest municipality in Tirol. It can be easily reached from all directions and is therefore an excellent base for excursions to the regional capital Innsbruck. However, Telfs itself also has plenty to offer. It is well known throughout Tirol for its Schleicherlaufen, a colourful procession held every five years as part of the carnival celebrations in February. This traditional parade was first held in 1571. Each summer, the Tiroler Volksschausspiele theatre festival draws well-known actors and thousands of visitors to Telfs. Wintersports enthusiasts can choose between two ski resorts: Rosshütte and Gschwandkopf. The Franciscan monastery in the heart of the town is over 300 years old and also well worth a visit.
