Locals and guests alike often refer to Steinberg am Rofan as the "most beautiful end of the world". As the name suggests, this small municpality with just 300 inhabitants lies in a high valley in the Rofan Mountains near Lake Achensee.
Steinberg am Rofan boasts a wonderful landscape, untouched nature and mighty mountains. Hiking and mountain biking are the two most popular activities in summer, while in winter the region is popular for ski touring, also known as ski mountaineering. Such is the beauty of Steinberg am Rofan, it has been awarded the status of a Mountaineering Village – one of a select few places in Austria to have been given this title in recoginition of their outstanding infrastructure as a basecamp for exploring the surrounding peaks. Steinberg am Rofan is the perfect starting point for long walks and hikes into the mountains. Several stages of the Eagle Walk (a long-distance hiking route crossing Tirol from east to west) also pass through this region. One of the most beautiful summits in the Brandenberg Alps is the Guffert, a mighty mountain offering fabulous views of the surrounding region. Another local highlight well worth a visit is the gorge through which the Steinberger Ache flows. At the nearby Schneidjoch ridge there is a cave with ancient carvings.
