Situated just 14km from Lienz, St. Johann im Walde is a quiet village on the banks of the Isel river surrounded by the Hohe Tauern National Park and its mighty 3,000m peaks.
The municipality has many protected buildings such as the Maria Schnee-Kapelle chapel, the Pfarrkirche Hl. Johannes der Täufer (John the Baptist) church and the former Gasthof Moar im Walde. St. Johann im Walde is the ideal starting point for hikes and bike rides into the mountains or along the cycle path to Lienz. In the warm summer months there is no better place to cool off than the Badeteich Falter with its excellent water quality and large lawn for relaxing. The area is also known for its excellent fishing. St. Johann im Walde regularly hosts competitions in traditional wrestling known as "Ranggeln".
