The small village of Spiss in the Samnauntal Valley borders the Swiss canton of Graubünden. Despite its tiny population of just 120 inhabitants, this remote settlement holds a unique record.
At 1,628 metres above sea level, Spiss is the highest municipality in Austria. Its hamlets and collections of houses are spread across several mountainsides. The names of these settlements as well as the mountains high above serve as a reminder that this region belonged to the province of Rhaetia in Roman times. Today it is connected to the major ski resort of Silvretta-Samnaun, which attracts many skiers and snowboarders in winter. During the summer months there is also plenty to see and do for those who enjoy outdoor sports. Highlights include hiking, mountainbiking, rafting and canyoning in the region where three countries converge: Austria, Switzerland and Italy. Further reasons to visit in Spiss include the fresh mountain air, traditionally warm welcome, friendly atmosphere and fascinating variety of wild flowers in a region which is known to be excellent for allergy sufferers.
