Schönwies is a pretty village in the Tiroler Oberland. While most residents live on the wide valley floor to the south of the Inn, a small number live to the north of the river in the settlement of Starkenbach.
"Schönwies" literally means "beautiful meadow", and there could be no more appropriate name for this municipality near Landeck in the Upper Inntal Valley home to 1,700 people. It is, as its name suggests, surrounded by beautiful lush meadows to the south of the Inn river. High above on a rocky outcrop stands the mighty Kronburg castle. Highlights in the village of Schönwies and the larger Imst holiday region include cultural attractions along the St James's Way and the former Via Claudia Augusta, pretty hiking and walking trails for all fitness levels, a wide selection of mountainbike rides (including along the Inn Cycle Path), many mountain huts and, in winter, both tobogganing and cross-country skiing. Alpine skiing is also available in the many small family-friendly ski resorts of the Tirolean Oberland.
