Schmirn

Schmirn is a small village at 1,400m in the Schmirntal Valley, a side valley branching off the Wipptal Valley north of the Brenner pass. This hiking paradise, which is home to 860 people, stretches from St. Jodok to the main ridge of the Tux Alps in the east, including the 3,476m Olperer mountain.

For centuries this area was used by local farmers to graze their cattle. In fact, until 1926 the small village of Hintertux at the end of the Zillertal Valley was officially part of the municipality of Schmirn. Today there are still several hiking routes leading up to the Hintertux Glacier. Some of the most spectacular glacier views can be enjoyed from the Tuxerjoch Haus hut at 2,310 m. Another popular destination is Lake Ramsgrubner See at around 2,000 metres above sea level. Guests interested in alpine plants should definitely visit the herb garden in Toldern which is open to the public and contains a wide range of herbs native to the Alps. Many of these are used to prepare the delicious local specialties served in the nearby Gasthaus Olpererblick. Snowshoe hiking and cross-country skiing are popular in winter. There is also a 3 km toboggan run.
