The small municipality of Pfaffenhofen near the town of Telfs, south of the Inn river, is dominated by the 2,796m high Hocheder mountain and has been inhabited since prehistoric times.
In the 5th century a missionary bishop took up residence in Pfaffenhofen for some time. This may be where the village takes its name from: "Pfaff" is a local dialect word in Tirol for "priest" or "cleric". The bishop's seat from this period can still be admired beneath the presbytery of the Pfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt parish church. Nature lovers will enjoy the chance to explore the natural surroundings on foot and by bike in summer. Popular destinations for mountain bike rides include Seefeld, the Mieming Plateau and the Pfaffenhofer Alm hut at 1,694 metres above sea level. The hut is famous for its excellent food and fine views. In winter it is just a short drive to the ski resort Rangger Köpfl and the cross-country skiing trails in the Seefeld Olympic Region.
