Surrounded by the mighty peaks of the Wilder Kaiser Mountains and the Kitzbüheler Horn, Oberndorf is a municipality situated in the wide expanses of the Leukental Valley.
This village with 2,100 residents half way between St. Johann in Tirol and Kitzbühel has maintained its traditional charm and offers a more relaxed, easy-going atmosphere than some of the larger nearby towns and villages. Until the 18th century Oberndorf was home to a flourishing copper mining industry. Lush meadows, rolling hills and babbling brooks today shape the landscape, with the many ponds in beautiful Bichlach well worth a visit. In winter Oberndorf is an excellent base for exploring the region’s many snowsure resorts offering slopes catering for all abilities. One such resort is the nearby St. Johann in Tirol/Oberndorf/Harschbichl, which is served by a cable car leaving from the village. Highlights include the fearsome Kanonenbuckelpiste mogul run and the family-friendly 2.5 km toboggan run. In summer the region is popular with walkers and hikers keen to explore the network of signposted trails, including those to the Schleierwasserfall waterfall or the Stanglalm hut. The Bichlachbad open-air swimming pool on the edge of the forest is the ideal place to cool off on hot summer days.
