For many wintersports enthusiasts, the village of Leutasch is inextricably linked with cross-country skiing. The excellent conditions in the Leutaschtal Valley at the foot of the Wetterstein Massif are famous among international guests but equally appreciated by locals. The region is protected to the south from the warm Föhn wind which often melts the snow in other resorts, while the Wetterstein mountains to the north shield Leutasch from the biting cold, letting the snow-laden clouds approach from the west. The result? A snowsure region with a surprisingly mild and pleasant climate.
Mild and pleasant is also a pretty good way to describe the village and its residents. Leutasch forms part of the Region Seefeld, yet lies apart from its larger and more fashionable counterpart Seefeld. Life here in Leutasch is a little slower, easier and more relaxed, so it should come as no surprise that the well-known Bavarian poet Ludwig Ganghofer was a frequent visitor to Leutasch and wrote most of his works here. Famous faces who visited Ganghofer’s hunting lodge included everyone from Richard Strauss to Leo Slezak.
