The resort of Kitzbühel is famous the world over not least thanks to the infamous Streif piste where the annual Hahnenkamm downhill race is held in January, when the world's best skiers gather in this chic village in the east of Tirol for a weekend of high-speed and high-adrenaline action. Little wonder that the village has also developed a reputation as one of the top international destinations for the winter jetset with its outstanding pistes and classy bars.
The resort itself is quite simply one of the best in the world. Advanced and expert skiers and snowboarders in particular will find an almost endless selection of runs and off-piste adventures. Thanks to its location, Kitzbühel enjoys excellent snowfall throughout the winter: on average, the season lasts 155 days. And when Mother Nature is smiling on this corner of Tirol, it offers some of the best poweder skiing anywhere. Those who are just starting out will be pleased to know that beginners can use the lifts at the bottom of the resort free of charge.
Kitzbühel is home to many legendary personalities, including former professional skier and popular singer Hansi Hinterseer. Things all started over a century ago when skiing pioneer Franz Reisch became the first man to ski down from the top of the Kitzbüheler Horn mountain in 1893.
