Kauns is a small municipality at the point where the Kaunertal Valley and the Ötztal Alps meet the Upper Inntal Valley.
The 500 people who reside in Kauns have chosen a beautiful place to live. Surrounded by the Kaunergrat Nature Park and perched on a sunny plateau at 1,050 metres above sea level, this village is the ideal holiday destination for families and all those who love the great outdoors. In summer there are many hiking trails and mountain bike trails leading up to the surrounding peaks, where a number of traditional huts serve delicious homemade food. During the winter months there is excellent skiing and snowboarding in the resorts of Ried-Prutz-Fendels, Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis and of course on the Kaunertal Glacier.
Among the highlight in Kauns itself is Berneck Castle, a mighty 13th century fortress built to the east of the village centre. In summer visitors can view the restored ruins and the chapel adnorned by a series of late gothic frescoes. Don't miss out on the chance to visit the Schlosshof in Kauns with its wall paintings dating back to the period around 1650. The Schlosshof is one of only few buildings in Kauns which survived a number of fires that destroyed much of the village.
