It is said that a number of famous visitors, including the President of Austria, have enjoyed the stunning panoramic views of the Zillertal Valley from traditional huts located above the village of Kaltenbach.
The easiest way to get there is using the cable car leaving from the centre of this village with a population of 1,250. Kaltenbach is a popular holiday destination throughout the year. In winter, skiers and snowboarders enjoy the excellent pistes on offer in the large resort of Hochfügen-Hochzillertal, while families and beginners prefer the quieter Spieljoch ski area. A popular year-round attraction away from the slopes is the Zillertalbahn, a gauge independent railway almost 100 years old running the length of the Zillertal Valley. One of the many excursions possible on this historic railway, which sometimes still operates steam engines, is a trip to the family-friendly leisure centre and spa in neighbouring Fügen. Kaltenbach is also a good starting point for hikes to the Kaltenbacher Wasserfall waterfall and the mighty Harter Schleierwasserfall, at 91m the highest waterfall in the Zillertal Valley.
