Surrounded by the iconic Loferer Rocky Mountains and the Kitzbühel Alps, the municipality of Hochhfilzen lies in the Pillerseetal Valley near the Grießenpass which connects Tirol and Salzburg.
The main village of the same name is home to 1,150 residents and becomes a hive of activity every December when the Biathlon World Cup comes to town. This event draws the world’s finest to Hochfilzen to compete in a traditional winter sport combining cross-country skiing and shooting. With the athletes come many fans keen to cheer on their heroes and emulate them on the cross-country skiing trails around the village. Alpine skiers and snowboarders will find what they are looking for in the Buchensteinwand ski area at 1,456m, with the resorts of Fieberbrunn and Waidring/Steinplatte also just a few kilometres away. In summer the most popular outdoor activity is hiking around the Buchensteinwand mountain, which is topped by a 30m wooden cross which doubles up as a viewing platform. After all that walking, why not revitalise your tired feet at the Kneipp water therapy facility next to beautiful Lake Wiesensee? Nearby there is also a rock climbing area popular with beginners and families with children. Other places to cool off on hot summer days include Lake Pillersee and the Badesee Waidring.
