Hikers’ paradise with wonderful views: Gries im Sellrain is a village at 1,200m altitude in the Sellraintal Valley, a side valley branching off to the south-west from the larger Inntal Valley.
The small village of Gries is home to just 600 residents. Its location at almost 1,200m altitude makes it an excellent base for hiking and mountaineers wishing to explore the many peaks of the Stubai Alps between the ski resort of Kühtai and the majestic Lüsenstal Valley. In winter this can be done on snowshoes, cross-country skis or simply on foot, while in summer there is a large network of hiking and mountain biking trails. One area particularly worth a visit thanks to its spectacular views is the Lüsenstal Valley, which runs south from the Sellraintal Valley in Gries as far as the mighty 3,298m Lüsener Fernerkogel. Popular activities include the family-friendly hike to the rustic Juifenalm hut. Those wanting more can continue from the hut up to one of the mountains above, such as the Roter Kogel. The Sellraintal Valley High Altitude Trail, which takes walkers around the valley at an altitude of around 2,000m, is also directly accessible from Gries and offers fabulous views. In winter visitors can enjoy the 4.6km toboggan run down from the Juifenalm or hit the slopes in nearby Kühtai.
