Gaimberg in East Tirol lies on a mountain slope overlooking Lienz and is home to 850 inhabitants. Gaimberg, Oberlienz and Thurn are collectively known as the Sonnendörfer (Sunshine Villages) thanks to their many hours of sunshine.
The municipality is, in fact, the smallest in East Tirol. Yet, despite its compact size, there is plenty to see and do in and around Gaimberg. Typically for villages in Tirol the church in Gaimberg can be seen from many kilometres away. It is a protected building and, together with the adjacent crypt chapel, bears witness to the centuries-old history of Gaimberg. Events bringing visitors and locals together include regular "Frühshoppen", morning brass band concerts followed by drinks. In winter it is just a short drive to the Zettersfeld ski resort offering 37 kilometres of pistes served by 12 lifts and cable cars.
Tip! Pay a visit to Friedl Webhofer, a local farmer who makes schnapps using fruit grown in his own orchard. Guided tours of the distillery are followed by a chance to sample some of the local produce.
