Once a remote farming village, Breitenbach am Inn today has partnerships and cooperations with many other towns and villages across Europe. It lies on the sunny north side of the Inntal Valley between Kufstein and Schwaz, surrounded by gently rolling hills.
Breitenbach am Inn has 3,350 inhabitants living in several hamlets which together form the village. In former times ships operating on the Inn would be brought to be repaired in the dockyard in Breitenbach, known as the Schopperstätte, with the Gasthof Schopper in the village a modern day reminder of this industrial past. Indeed, traditions and customs are of great importance to the residents of this municipality which fosters partnerships and connections to many villages across Europe. Among the most spectacular of these traditions is the Perchtenlauf in December, where residents process through the streets in colourful costumes and fearsome masks to drive away the evil spirits of winter. In summer, keen hikers should explore the nearby Blessenberg mountain with fine views of the Inntal Valley from its summit at 1,743m. At the western end of the municipality lies the idyllic Lake Berglsteinersee. In winter the area boasts a large network of cross-country skiing trails in Schönau-Angerberg and the family-friendly ski resort of Alpbachtal Wildschönau.
