The municipality of Anras has a population of 1,250 and lies on a sunny plateau next to the Pustertal High Mountain Road. It comprises the main village and several smaller hamlets on the mountain slopes and the valley floor.
Anras in the Pustertal Valley is famed for its many hours of sunshine and idyllic location between the Defereggen Mountains and the Lienz Dolomites. It used to be known as the "corn store" of the Pustertal Valley, where corn harvested in the region would be stored during the winter. Today there are just a few buildings, including several mills, which remain from this period. Also well worth a visit is the Pfleggerichtshaus Schloss Anras, one of the most important secular buildings in East Tirol. It has housed the local history museum since 1997, where visitors can admire works of art by famous local painters including Paul Flora.
