Ainet is a municipality in East Tirol with a little over 900 inhabitants. It is located 7 kilometres from Lienz, the largest town in the region.
When it comes to customs and traditions, the small village of Ainet is a big name in Tirol. The musical instrument known as the "Osttiroler Hackbrett" was invented in Ainet, and many local residents are still experts at playing this delightful stringed instrument. Like many other villages in Tirol, Ainet has a local brass band which performs several concerts a year with their members dressed in traditional clothing. Also well worth checking out are the wooden masks carved by members of the local "Krampusverein". In December each year they are used for the traditional "Krampusläufe", when the fearsome figure of Krampus punishes children who have misbehaved during the year. Ainet also offers plenty to see and do in the summer months, including a large network of hiking trails in the surrounding mountains.
