Magnificent town houses, proud fortresses and quaint alleyways: The beautiful old town centres in Tyrol's cities quickly cast a spell over you. They tell stories from past centuries, and in some of their old walls the passage of time seems to have stopped. The town centres of the historic towns in Tyrol mostly date back to the Middle Ages and have been lovingly restored.

Innsbruck, once the favourite city of Emperor Maximilian I, is famous for the Golden Roof, which he had built onto his residence for his wedding. This landmark adorns the historic city centre with its almost 500-year-old baroque and gothic facades. Nearby are the Imperial Hofburg and the Hofkirche, as well as the old city tower. Maria-Theresien-Straße, a promenade with baroque palaces and modern shopping centres, leads to the imposing Triumphal Gate.

Places of interest in Hall in Tirol

A stroll through the historic alleyways of Hall in Tirol takes visitors back to the Middle Ages, when the town grew rich through salt production. The old town centre, larger than that of Innsbruck, is considered one of the most beautiful in Austria. Hasegg Castle towers above the town with its mint tower and mint museum, which provides information about European minting technology. Particularly worth seeing is the Upper Town Square with the 700-year-old town hall, which used to serve as the town castle.

Festung Kufstein in Tirol

Places of interest in Kufstein

Kufstein's landmark is the over 800-year-old fortress overlooking the River Inn, which is home to several museums and the largest open-air organ in the world, the Heldenorgel. It plays daily at 12 noon. Below the castle is the old town centre, with the picturesque Römerhofgasse and its richly decorated Tyrolean houses. Parts of the town are characterised by magnificent Art Nouveau buildings, and the medieval water bastion on the Inn is also worth a visit.

Lienz in Osttirol

Places of interest in Lienz

In summer, Lienz's old town centre has a Mediterranean flair with palm trees and Italian influence. Bruck Castle, the 750-year-old landmark, towers over the Isel and is home to important works of art by Albin Egger-Lienz and Franz Defregger. The old town centre invites you to take a stroll with sights such as the Liebburg castle, the Antoniuskirchl church and the Franciscan monastery. Small cafés, boutiques and craft shops characterise the townscape.

Rattenberg in Tirol

Places of interest in Rattenberg

Rattenberg, the smallest town in Austria with only 400 inhabitants, impresses with its medieval town centre in the Inn-Salzach style, where colourful facades form a harmonious ensemble. The town is known for its glass art and visitors can watch glassblowers at work. The crafts museum and the Augustinian Museum, which displays Tyrolean art treasures from nine centuries, are well worth a visit. The 10th century castle towers above the town.

Schwaz, a historic mining town in Tyrol, offers numerous impressive sights. The Schwaz silver mine, once the largest silver mine in the world, allows visitors to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of mining. The Maria Himmelfahrt parish church is one of the largest Gothic churches in Tyrol and impresses with its magnificent architecture. Another highlight is the Franciscan monastery, which is famous for its artistic fresco paintings. Freundsberg Castle, situated above Schwaz, offers a museum as well as a magnificent view of the town and the surrounding mountain landscape.
