With a population of around 18,400, the town of Kufstein, whose centre is dominated by the imposing fortress, is the second largest in Tyrol. The more than 800-year-old castle is not only its landmark, but also houses a museum and the largest open-air organ in the world, the Heldenorgel. The Römerhofgasse in the old town centre is a gem with its traditional, richly decorated Tyrolean houses. Magnificent Art Nouveau buildings can be found in parts of the town, and the Wasserbastei, a remnant of the medieval town wall situated on the River Inn, is also worth a visit. Kufstein has a lot to offer culturally, such as the annual operetta summer in August. Hiking excursions into the surrounding mountains are also always worthwhile. In winter, it is not far to the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental, Austria's largest interconnected winter sports area.
