Mountain doctors, giants, emperors, deserted mountain pastures - sounds like a winter hiking fairytale. And indeed it is. But please pack a good level of fitness and plenty of provisions, then the winter magic will last for the entire 475 vertical meters and beyond.
Medium-difficulty circular hike with beautiful views of the Kaiser Mountains along the entire route directly from the center of Ellmau. Passing several pretty hamlets, you can choose in the Riesenwald forest whether you want to go left or right around the Rieser Moor. The Biedringer Platte offers the perfect vantage point to capture the fantastic view of the Kaiser Mountains and Ellmau. At the (unmanaged!) Biedringer Alm, we recommend a refreshment stop with hot tea and a snack.
Start in the centre of Ellmau. Take the footbridge there towards the district of Wimm and follow the trail until you reach the former Gasthof Riesen inn. From Riesen, the beautiful circular walk is also ideal for snowshoeing. Now follow the winter hiking trail through the magnificent winter landscape to the Biedringer Alm mountain hut (1,131 m, does not feature any establishments that serve food). Here, you can marvel at the breathtaking view of the Wilder Kaiser region blanketed in deep snow. This is the perfect place to stop for something to eat before returning to the valley via the farms in Biedring.
