Challenging and panoramic natural toboggan run with legendary hut cuisine.
The Wettersteinhütte tobogganing track is accessible directly from the P2 Stupfer parking lot in the Gaistal via a cleared winter hiking trail. The ascent, which is well signposted, leads northward from the parking lot with a steady incline, passing just below the Wangalm. After navigating a slightly more challenging valley section, crossing a bridge to the left, and continuing diagonally uphill, you’ll reach the Wettersteinhütte at an altitude of 1,717 meters.
The ascent, which covers a considerable elevation gain of 577 meters and takes about 100 minutes, is challenging in parts but is rewarded at the top with an unparalleled panorama stretching across the Seefeld Plateau to the imposing "Grand Dame of the Alps," the Hohe Munde, standing at 2,662 meters. The grand finale: a curvy, three-kilometer descent through the picturesque Wetterstein winter wonderland. At the sunny mountain hut, Beate and Hans welcome hungry hikers and tobogganers with hearty Tyrolean dishes and other delicious fare. By prior arrangement, the hut also serves outstanding spare ribs in the evening.
Key facts about the tobogganing track:
• Length: approx. 3 kilometers
• Elevation gain: 577 m
• Lift assistance: none
• Lighting: none
Important notes:
The natural tobogganing track is not lit in the evenings. However, overnight stays at the Wettersteinhütte are possible upon request. For further information, reservations, and orders (e.g., for spare ribs), call +43 664 8958227 or email info@wettersteinhuette.at.
Important: Even for experienced sledders, this tobogganing track is a challenge! For children, beginners, and family outings, we recommend the sledding tracks at Hämmermoosalm or Katzenkopfhütte instead.
Recommended equipment:
For this track, a sports toboggan and helmet are required. Multiple layers of clothing, warm gloves, a hat, and waterproof jackets and pants provide protection and comfort. Sturdy boots with good traction (for braking) are essential, while poles and crampons (spikes) can provide extra support during the ascent.
Additionally, sleds and toboggans can be rented at various rental points throughout the Region Seefeld.
Track conditions:
The tobogganing track is not groomed or checked daily, so usage is at your own risk. We strongly recommend checking the current conditions directly with the Wettersteinhütte (+43 664 8958227) before heading out. The ascent is the best opportunity to assess the track—if in doubt, it’s better to turn back. Please note that the ascent and descent share the same trail, which is also used for winter hiking, so be prepared for possible traffic in both directions.
All up-to-date information on the status of tobogganing tracks, winter hiking trails, and ice facilities can be found in the Region Seefeld winter sports report.
