Venediger Altitude Trail Stage 2

Prägraten am Großvenediger / Venedigergruppe
Difficulty ratings: medium
Route length: 7.6 km
Duration: 3:00 h

On the second day of hiking, we follow the Schwerinerweg for a while, winding our way up the serpentines to the Türmljoch at an altitude of almost 2,800 meters. Our hearts beat a few beats faster in the thinner air. It's a good thing that our next stage destination, the Johan-nishütte, is just under 700 meters lower. Incidentally, it is one of the oldest huts in the Eastern Alps. Built in 1857, extended in 1999.

Tour character

Medium-difficulty tour on red mountain paths. Sure-footedness and alpine knowledge are essential for the route in high alpine terrain. Partly steep ascents and descents as well as pathless terrain - marked with cairns. A good level of fitness is required.

Description

Continue along the "Schwerinerweg" for a short distance into the Maurertal, and then quickly gain altitude in serpentines up to the Türmljoch (2,772 m). The descent leads, well marked with stone markers, and in the lower section of the path increasingly steep, to the oldest hut in the Eastern Alps, the Johannishütte (built in 1857, expanded in 1999).
