Most huts on Tyrolean mountain lakes are open from June to October, depending on the weather and snow conditions. Some huts, such as the Olpererhütte, start the season earlier or offer extended opening hours in good conditions. Before visiting, you should check the current opening times online or by phone. You can find the contact details of the respective huts in our hut finder.
Yes, you are generally allowed to swim in mountain lakes unless it is expressly forbidden. Combined with a mountain lake hike, swimming in a mountain lake can be an exciting (and cold) day programme.
Mountain lakes are usually very cold due to their altitude and water supply. Most mountain lakes are fed by meltwater from glaciers or snow. This water is naturally very cold and only warms up slowly. In summer, the surface temperatures of mountain lakes can reach 10-15 °C, but many lakes remain significantly colder even then. In winter, most lakes are partially or completely frozen over.
