High-alpine mountain hut with glacier views
German Alpine Club, Hamburg & Niederelbe DIvision
Hamburg‘s highest house is, in fact, in the Ötztal Valley. To be precise, in the Upper Gurgl Valley, close to the Gurgler glacier. Built in 1881, this hut run by the Hamburg & Niederelbe Division of the German Alpine Club is steeped in tradition. It has been expanded and renovated many times since, and although it is now equipped with modern amenities, the rustic ambience remains. It also has a small chapel. And because heavenly gifts are particularly appreciated here and great emphasis is placed on serving high quality food, the proprietors have joined the "So schmecken die Berge" ("That’s what mountains taste like") campaign. The daily supply of fresh produce is delivered by a modern freight cable car, which can also be used to transport backpacks when required. Contact the hut proprietor to take advantage of this transport service. The hut sleeps around 60 people and is an excellent base for challenging hikes and climbs.
