The first Bamberger Hütte was built in 1893 in the Sella Massif in the Dolomite Mountains, but was expropriated in 1919 by the Treaty of St Germain. The Bamberg Divisoin looked around for a new site and made a good choice in the Hopfgartner ski lodge at Salzachjoch in the Kitzbühel Alps. The magnificent alpine meadows, idyllic alpine lakes and surrounding mountain slopes are a unique sight to behold. The hut has been extensively renovated and was renamed as the Neue Bamberger Hütte in 1960. It is particularly popular with hikers and ski touring enthusiasts. The proprietor cooks personally for his guests, who will find comfortable lodgings for 90 persons, including shower and drying facilities. The hut's small cable car used to transport provisions is generally available for luggage transport (no fee charged). Well known surrounding mountains: Schafsiedel, Aleitenspitze, Schwebenkopf, Tristkopf, Kröndlhorn.

How to get to the Neue Bamberger Hütte

From Kelchsau (near Hopfgarten) leaving from Gasthof Wegscheid (1.75 hours). Avoid the summer trail in winter (danger of avalanches), instead take the winter trail from Gasthof Wegscheid (2 hours). From Gasthaus Ronach, Gerlosstraße, via Salzachjoch: 2.5 hours.
