The builders of this hut had lofty ambitions – the Kaunergrathütte hut below the Madatschjoch ridge was opened in 1903 and is the highest mountain hut in the Pitztal Valley. Its surroundings are correspondingly monumental. Just the right place for attending a demanding course on rock and ice. Participants and other guests will find the perfect retreat with its terrace, beautiful dining lounge with reading corner, cosy beds and a family room. There is, however, no cable car to deliver food and material; provisions are delivered by helicopter. There is a rock climbing area nearby and the hut is a good starting point for many high alpine tours. The Kaunergratvariante (Kauner Ridge Variant), E5 long distance hiking trail and the Via Alpina Trail all lead past the hut.

From Plangeroß in 3.5 hours, from Mandarfen in 6 hours, from Riffelsee lake (cable car from Mandarfen) in 4 hours, from Trenkwald in 5.5 hours
