Description

Traditional hut near the Großvenediger mountain
German Alpine Club, Munich & Oberland Division

Face to face with the Großvenediger and its majestic glacier panorama – this alone is quite an achievement. And to be spoilt with high-quality homemade food, warm showers and comfortable accommodation at 2,121 metres above sea level is not something that should be taken for granted. It is thanks in part to Archduke Johann of Austria that this mountain refuge was built here, after whom it was named in recognition of his involvement. Today, however, you will no longer find the original hut built in 1858. Not that it matters, the “new” Johannis Hut, which was completed in 1871 and has been renovated many times since, is still very quaint and rustic. Thanks to its location it is an important starting point for hikes onto the glacier.
