Description

High-altitude hut on the Stubai Glacier
German Alpine Club, Hildesheim Division

Perched high in the mountains, surrounded by peaks over 3,000 metres both with and without glaciers, the Hildesheimer Hütte has enjoyed a spectacular location ever since it was built back in 1896. It is an important base on the Stubai Glacier and used by hikers who wish to cross from the Ötztal Valley into the Stubai Valley – or vice-versa. Since its construction at the end of the 19th century the hut has been expanded and renovated several times. Today it sleeps around 80 guests, most of whom sleep in dormitory-style rooms with matresses next to each other. The hut is open from mid-June until mid-September. During the remaining months of the year there is a self-catering winter room sleeping 12 people. Experienced hikers and mountaineers will enjoy exploring the many 3000-metre-high peaks around the hut, including the highest summit in the Stubai Alps: the Zuckerhütl. There is a rock-climbing area near the hut. Most transitions to other huts in the area require a glacier crossing.
