Description

Highest mountain refuge in the Allgäu Alps
German Alpine Club, Düsseldorf Division

Perched high above the village of Elbigenalp in the middle of the Lechtal Valley, the Hermann-von-Barth-Hütte on the southern slopes of the Hornbach Massif offers wonderful views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. It was built in 1900 and has a long tradition as the highest mountain refuge in the Allgäu Alps. The hut is located on the "Enzensberger Weg", the main high-altitude hiking trail in the Hornbach Massif. Both the outer facade of the hut and the cosy dining room are covered in wood. The hut sleeps 65 people, with a number of private niches available. There is a winter room which is kept open during the cold months of the year. The hut is also used as a base for alpine training seminars; it has a small seminar room with a bouldering wall. Those in search of more spectacular rock climbing adventures will find over 50 climbing routes in the area around the hut.
