Description

Remote mountain refuge surrounded by 3,000m peaks
Austrian Alpine Club, Lienz Division

The high-alpine hiking trails running through the Schober Mountains from East Tirol to Carinthia are remote and rugged. Walkers and hikers who are surprised by bad weather will be pleased to reach the Gössnitzkopf-Biwak, an emergency refuge with enough space for ten people. Things are very basic, with no food available. Instead, there are fabulous views of the 3,000m peaks topped with glistening glaciers such as the Gößnitzkees. From the refuge it takes around two hours to walk to the Elberfelder Hütte or the Lienzer Hütte.
