The Brandenburger Haus enjoys a wonderful location protected from avalanches on the southern slopes of the Dahmannspitze (3,397 metres) with its mighty glacier. Here, at the intersection between the Gepatschferner and Kesselwandferner glaciers, walkers and hikers are just ten kilometres as the crow flies from the nearest village, Vent, yet right at the heart of what is one of the largest glacier landscapes in the Eastern Alps. The hut opened in 1909 after being built over the course of several summers by the Brandenburg Division of the German Alpine Club. Today, the approach to the hut still leads across crevass-riven glaciers – making it high-alpine accommodation that is very much for "experts only". Ropes and crampons are a must. The hut sleeps around 100 people. Electricity is generated by solar power, heat comes from wood-burning stoves. There is mobile phone reception at the hut. Food is served in a traditional wood-panelled dining room.
