Mountain hikes WildeWasserWeg: (Stage 2) Grawa Wasserfall - Sulzenau Alm - Sulzenauhütte

Neustift im Stubaital /
Difficulty ratings: medium
Route length: 4.3 km
Duration: 2:30 h

The impetuous cascade of the Sulzaubach stream is impressively wide at the Grawa waterfall. At the Sulzenauffall, the water shoots like an arrow in a narrow aisle 200 meters into the depths.

Tour character

The waters are wild, but the paths to get there are moderate: from the Raffein car park/bus stop, it is only half a kilometer on an easy forest path to the Grawa waterfall. Nearby is the Grawa Alm, which invites you to take a break. Shortly before the Alm, the trail leads back to the bus stop or parking lot on the other side of the stream. The loop can be extended at will by starting at an earlier point. If you've got lard in your legs, climb up from the Grawa waterfall to the beautiful Sulzenaualm with Sulzenaufall.

Description

Stage 2: Grawa Wasserfall - Sulzenau Alm - Sulzenauhütte

Then WildeWasserWeg Trail snakes its way along the old pasture path: direct, steep, uncomplicated. Surefootedness, good stamina and most importantly good boots are required because of the wet ground. On the way up Grawa waterfall can be experienced close-by on two further vantage spots – one at the same level as the turbulent deep stilling basin, the other directly above the exposed edge. There you can experience the power of water and feel the quavering caused by the waterfalls as well as the water mist on your skin.

After a walking time of a bit more than an hour you get to Sulzenegg (1,800m) from where an almost flat path leads through the valley basin that has been shaped and is dominated by the three waterfalls and the many meanders to Sulzenaualm hut.  Enjoy the view of the glacier all along.

From the idyllically located mountain hut the trail leads close to the foot of the most powerful of the three waterfalls – Sulzenaufall. The water of this unique waterfall drops 200m down a narrow swath and into the green pasture ground of Sulzenaualm pasture. Especially in the early afternoon the waterfall shimmers in all shades. It whooshes and sprays its mist in all directions and at its end it even forms a fantastic water mushroom.

You continue along serpentines to Sulzenauhütte hut in a relaxed way. Sulzenauhütte, which is set on nice, flat ground, towers like an aerie directly above a rocky edge.
