Description

For some years now, there has been a variant route option along the Way of St. James that leads from Stams to Oberstaufen via three alpine passes: Fern Pass, Gaicht Pass and Joch Pass. The first destination for the pilgrims, however, is the Holzleitensattel col on the sunny Mieming Plateau.

The route up to the plateau starts with a hike through the stunning Mötzer Klamm gorge. As the pilgrims make their way through the romantic wilderness, they can enjoy the constant view of Burg Klamm castle up ahead at the end of the mini gorge.

From the castle, which is privately owned, hikers’ have the "Mittlere Oberinntal" part of the Upper Inn Valley laid out at their feet. The route continues to Obsteig and from there to the legendary "Arzkasten", which owes its name to the former mining activities carried out in the area. The route then climbs gently up to the Holzleitensattel col, which marks the transition from the sunny Mieming Plateau to the Gurgl Valley, before heading down into the Gurgl Valley and to the start of the ascent up to the Fern Pass.

The sunny plateau is a place of exceptional scenic beauty and a destination for many hikers and pilgrims, especially in autumn when the plateau's larch forests are draped in gold. This unique natural attraction draws hikers, nature lovers and pilgrims to the sunny plateau year after year.
