Sellrainer Hüttenrunde: 2. Etappe
****
We start in long-distance hiking mode: pack our rucksacks, check the route and weather, lace up our hiking boots and off we go. Today's stage takes us to the Westfalenhaus - a popular base not only for long-distance hikers, but also for mountaineers. From here, three-thousand-metre peaks such as Lüsener Fernerkogel and Lüsener Spitze beckon. After a long day, we are tempted by the hut cuisine.
Difficult stage on black mountain paths. Sure-footedness, alpine experience and a very good level of fitness are required.
On the second day of this alpine tour, you hike from the Potsdamer Hütte mountain hut to the Westfalenhaus mountain hut. 270 vertical metres separate these two huts but don't let that fool you: this stage actually has an elevation gain of almost 1,500 metres and an elevation loss of over 1,200 metres. From the Potsdamer Hütte mountain hut, follow route number 119 past the Schafalm mountain hut to the summit of Roter Kogel at 2,870 metres above sea level. The route then leads down into the Lüsens Valley along trail no. 36 and trail no. 35 to the village of Lüsens at 1,300 metres above sea level. From there, you follow the Dr.-Siemon-Weg trail to the final destination of this stage, the Westfalenhaus mountain hut. Walking time: 9 hours.
Alternative route 1: Via Hochgrafljoch (2,693 m) by following route no. 35 down into the Lüsens Valley. Then continue as above.
Alternative route 2: Up to Roter Kogel (2,832 m) then down past the Aflinger Alm mountain hut (1814 m, not open to the public) to Praxmar. You can stop for food and drink at the Alpengasthof Praxmar. Continue to the Westfalenhaus mountain hut the following day.
Joining options: From Praxmar or Lüsens, follow the Sommerweg trail to the Westfalenhaus mountain hut (walking time 3 or 2 hours respectively).
