Brechhorn
****
They are not competitors, but good neighbors: the Grosser Rettenstein, the most striking peak in the Brixental Valley, and the popular panoramic mountain Brechhorn. But the Brechhorn is easier to climb!
Start in the valley or take the cable car to the top? From the mountain station of the Alpenrosenbahn cable car, there are still around six kilometers of trail and 600 meters of altitude to cover up to the Brechhorn. The hike is mainly on wide, easy paths, only the steep ascent to the summit requires some mountain experience. Halfway up, the Brechhornhaus is an inviting place to stop for refreshments, while the mostly treeless ridges provide an unobstructed view of the fascinating mountain world.
Our hike begins at the Alpenrosenbahn’s mountain-top station. Then we walk a short stretch downhill along the road and branch off to the left at the Höhningscharte onto the walking trail towards the Kreuzjöchlsee and the Brechhornhaus. Just below the Brechhornhaus we go through a turnstile and hike uphill to Kreuzjoch. From here starts the steeper climb to the Brechhorn. Walking mostly along the ridge of the mountain, we maintain a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains. Once we arrive at the Brechhorn summit cross, we are welcomed by a fantastic, breath-taking panorama of the Kitzbühel Alps, the Wilder Kaiser, the Hohe Tauern and lots more. Our descent takes the same return route as far as the Schledererkopf. There, observing the signposts, we keep to the left in the direction of Feldbergalm / Brandeggalm. Once there, on the alpine pastures, we walk along a forest road to the Schledernalm. Passing by and after a few meters, we branch off, uphill to the right, on a small climb to Kreuzjoch and Brechhornhaus. At Brechhornhaus we call in for well-earned refreshments before we continue our return journey. Taking initially the road, after a few minutes we branch off to the right onto the hiking trail in the direction of the Alpenrosenbahn, meeting up with the road already known to us, back to the mountain-top station and the mountain restaurant, Talkaser.
