Mountain hikes Stage of the Berliner Höhenweg (Zillertal Runde): Gamshütte - Friesenberghaus

Finkenberg, Zillertal /
Difficulty ratings: difficult
Route length: 15 km
Duration: 9:30 h

Welcome to the long-distance hiking rhythm: Check the weather and route and then the important question: what Tyrolean delicacies await me at the next hut? A good 7 hours' walk away is the Friesenberghaus, which is both a refuge and a memorial to the resistance against anti-Semitism. Pssst: The innkeepers have a heart for hungry long-distance hikers.

Tour character

Long and challenging stage above the tree line and therefore largely without shade. Overall, a varied route with steep grassy slopes, narrow paths, rough boulder terrain and exposed passages.

Description

From the Gamshütte, follow the trail southwest to the Vordere Grinbergspitze, 2.765 m for about 100 meters. The Berliner Höhenweg then branches off to the left, heading south through the steep grassy slopes of the Vordere Grinberg. Caution:Slippery when wet!

The trail curves through the Schrahnbachkar and ascends slightly to the Graue Platte 2.158 m, a side ridge of the Hintere Grinbergspitze, offering a magnificent view of the Zemmgrund. The path No. 536 winds through dwarf pine-covered rocks southwest to the Feldalm,1.885 m. From the Feldalm,1.885 m, cross a pasture fence and traverse horizontally through dwarf pines to the Pitzenalm, 1.874 m. Then head north, cross the Pitzenbach, and ascend steep switchbacks to the Milchtrager, 2.030 m. Caution:Snow patches often remain until midsummer!

The trail now continues with a spectacular panorama for about 2 km to the meadows above the Kesselalm. Descend about 100 meters to the Kesselalm and cross the Kesselbach, a beautiful spot for a break with a waterfall view! Climb about 100 meters from the creek, then proceed to the end of the Riffler East Ridge. The trail sharply turns around the ridge and ascends steeply through well-layered rock in the Rifflerrinnen. At 2.420 m, the terrain flattens, and the path descends over rough boulders to the southern shore of the Wesendlekarsee. Though there are few footpaths, the trail is well-marked. Gradually ascend through the Wesendlekar until you reach the path from Breitlahner to Friesenberghaus beneath the Petersköpfl, 2.679 m. Follow this path around the Petersköpfl, 2.679 m and in a wide arc to the Friesenberghaus, 2.498 m.
