Mountain hikes St Leonharder Höhenweg (high-level trail)

St. Leonhard im Pitztal /
Difficulty ratings: difficult
Route length: 17 km
Duration: 9:00 h

Phew - the hard facts of the St. Leonharder Höhenweg are quite a challenge, but the effort at mid-height on the Geigenkamm is well worth it. During the nine-hour hike, some of us are sure to fall in love with the Pitztal valley and the beautiful peaks of the Kaunergrat ridge. We are definitely real Geigenkamm groupies!

Tour character

The ascent to the Ludwigsburger Hütte begins with a leisurely stroll along a forest path or a steep shortcut. At the Ludwigsburger Hütte, you can already anticipate the impressive views that await you throughout the day. Here you should fortify yourself again, or take enough food with you for the journey. The cirques on the sunny side of the Geigenkamm now stretch for hours. In places, the trail runs through steep flanks and is steep here and there, with sections secured with ropes. It never gets boring, as you are always wondering what the next edge of the terrain will look like. And the view to the other side of the valley to the wild peaks of Gsallkopf, Rofelewand and co. is fantastic throughout. At the very end, a real dream spot awaits with the Luibisböden and it is certainly difficult to leave this long but exceptionally beautiful high-altitude route again towards the valley floor. After about two thirds of the way, there are also opportunities to descend to St. Leonhard.

Description

Follow the well-marked agricultural road to the catered mountain hut Ludwigsburger Hütte. Then continue to walk to the Lehnerjoch and turn right after approx. 10 minutes and follow the well-waymarked track southwards. After crossing a few cirques and streams, follow a steep, secured descent to another cirque, the Hairlacher Kar. Next, climb up the steep track (secured with ropes) to the stunning Mauerköpfl summit. Continue to walk over Alpine pastures beneath the Hairlacher Seekopf summit to the fork a little east of the Am Gampen. Then climb uphill in the direction of the Wilder See until you reach the Brandsee lake at the same altitude as the Schoaßkogel peak. At another cirque, the Biedere Kar, continue to walk on to the so called Luibisböden. It is possible to descend via the Luibisalm to Piösmes.

Please note that no one should attempt this Alpine trek unless confident of good fitness levels and stamina.
