Yes, children, the nature playground on the Spieljoch is a special attraction, but there are many more great discoveries to be made on the hiking trail to Hochfügen!
This eventful, moderately difficult and family-friendly hike begins with a ride up the Spieljochbahn cable car and leads to six idyllic, partly managed alpine pastures, of which the Gartalm even houses a small museum. The trail is not steep and therefore also suitable for families with children, and there is no shortage of welcome refreshment stops. How do you complete the loop? Quite simply: in Hochfügen, a bus takes you back to Fügen, the journey takes just under half an hour.
This route kicks off with an ascent on the gondola lift. Once you reach the mountain station, you can follow a gentle, wide trail up to the Spieljoch summit. This is followed by a short rocky section on a beautiful and at times narrow hiking trail. Head through the Alpine pastures and past the Geolsalm to reach the Gartalm Hochleger at
1830 m. The 400-year-old hut is well worth a visit and still bears the marks from the age of silver mining. Every day, visitors to the Gartalm pasture are able to see cows and sheep – and with chamois, marmots, mountain hares, and golden eagles also on show, it’s a must for nature lovers! Though narrow in parts, the mountain trail leading from the Gartalm is not exposed and is almost entirely free from inclines: This richly panoramic route takes in streams, Alpine roses, well-shaded forest, and sunny open terrain en route to the Gamssteinhaus hut/Loassattel saddle (1683 m). Continue along a gravel road, completing a short ascent towards the Maschentalalm pasture (no refreshment options) before heading through more Alpine pasture terrain and woodland to reach the Lamarkalm pasture (no refreshment options). You then make your descent along the
winding gravel road to Hochfügen and return to Fügen by bus.
This trail has received an award from the Tirolean Government and can of course be completed in reverse order (by hiking from Hochfügen to the mountain station of the Spieljochbahn cable car).
