Mountain hikes Round hike to Padauner Kogel

Difficulty ratings: medium
Route length: 12 km
Duration: 5:00 h

From below, it looks a little unadorned. But at its summit, the Padauner Kogel offers you a panorama that makes civilization seem small.

Tour character

A fairly quick summit success and wide 360-degree views - these are the trump cards of this moderately difficult mountain tour. The Padauner Kogel is centrally located in the Wipptal valley between Steinach am Brenner and the Brenner Pass. Ideal for an afternoon excursion from Innsbruck, from where it can be reached with the S-Bahn line S3. Still not overcrowded. Start at the St. Jodok am Brenner stop, five kilometers of short ascent via the Vals valley directly to the summit. A flat ascent at the start, then much steeper on the wooded and cool north-east side of the mountain. Technically, however, not very demanding. The treeless, grassy summit offers a panoramic view of the Olperer, the Brenner, the Stubai Alps and Innsbruck in the distance. On the way back, a detour to Gasthof Steckholzer in Padaun is worthwhile. The tour is suitable from spring to late fall.

Description

You start from the train station in St. Jodok in the direction of the village center, where the Kirchsteig leads between Gasthof Lamm and the bank to the last farm, where the road joins a forest path. Continue into the valley on a gentle incline until the signs indicate the turn-off to the right onto a forest path. Follow this until the fork at Padaun/Padauner Kogel. Turn right here and follow the slightly steeper forest path. After approx. 30 minutes you come to a fork, where you have the option of following the path to the left directly to Padaun, then continue right towards Padauner Kogel. Once you reach a small clearing, you only have to climb the grassy hump of the Kogel via a few hairpin bends and the summit cross is already in sight.

The descent is either via the same path as the ascent or via path no. 82, which leads across mountain meadows and sparse forest to Padaun. Afterwards, a short stretch of asphalt road leads to Gasthof Steckholzer. After a well-deserved refreshment, you pass the stable directly after the inn. The trail leads over a stream out of the valley through the forest back to the trail on which you ascend. From here, it is another 40-minute walk to St. Jodok railroad station.
