Murmeltiersteig
****
Something is brewing here: An interest in marmots and a love of mountain hiking are awakened on this exciting family tour. Another attraction: ascent and descent by cable car.
Marmots live in the high mountains, so families should be fit and in good physical condition for this hike on moderately difficult paths. From the Lazidbahn mountain station (Serfaus valley resort), the route takes you along the narrow Murmeltiersteig trail via Kitzköfpl to the romantic Furglersee lake and on to Komperdell, where you can use the cable car to descend to Serfaus. Walking time for the entire loop is approx. three hours, not including breaks to look for marmots.
Character: Hundreds of marmots live here. This is typical marmot area. Through information boards, you learn more about their dens, their life, their usefulness. You will see young marmots – the “little monkeys” – running across the path like scampering balls of yarn. You can observe the lonely “guards” and hear their warning whistles.
Description: From the top station of the Lazid (S301) first on the wide road to the Scheid (S217). From the WW (S218) behind the lift station on the Murmeltiersteig 25a, via Kitzköpfl to Furglersee (S211). From Furglersee follow the long-distance trail 702 (Steig 21), cross the Malfristwiesen meadows to Komperdell (Kölner Haus).
