Description

From the car park, walk past the dam, cross the field and then take the marked alpine trail that leads off to the right. Behind the forest, you'll come to a fork in the path: the path on the right leads to the Mittergrat Hütte mountain hut, the one on the left joins the AV149 trail towards the Bielefelder Hütte mountain hut and the Mittertaler Scharte. Follow the trail on the left, which initially leads gently uphill and then gets steeper as it crosses the eastern slope of the Vordere and Hintere Karles Spitz. Before the trail turns right and starts climbing very steeply uphill, you will come to a mighty boulder with a circular red-and-white marking. At this point, you should take a break before turning around and following the route back because the rest of the trail up to the Mittertaler Scharte is difficult and includes sections that are secured with wire ropes where climbing is required.
