Kelchalm - Bochumer Hütte
****
Hipped roof, dormers, bell tower - the stately miners' house of the former copper mine does not look like a traditional alpine hut. But it is extremely cosy and spacious, ecologically sound and stands in a wonderful alpine location.
Several mostly easy paths lead to the destination: from Gasthof Hechenmoos in Aurach in 2.5 hours, from the wildlife park in Oberaurach in 2.5 hours, from the Pochwerk ruins in 20 minutes. There are no more miners at the Bochumer Hütte these days, but there are many mountain hikers and climbers. They enjoy excellent food in the cozy wood-panelled restaurant and the comfort of modern accommodation.
We start in Oberaurach. The hike takes us to the district of Kochau, where you can admire very beautiful, stylish Tyrolean houses. We continue on the road to the farm 'Exenberg', after which we follow the signs for the Exenberg Alm. After a few hundred meters the alpine road ends and we continue on a mountain path towards Kelchalm. This historical building was used by the miners as a place to eat and sleep. Nowadays the Kelchalm, which belongs to the section of the German Alpine Club Bochum, is a hut wich offers hungry hikers excellent cuisine. After the break, we make our way back, which leads us past the ruins of the former stamp mill. These foundations give us an idea of the heyday of mining in this area. Via the Almenweg we reach a junction that leads us towards Exenberg and from there on the well-known path back to our starting point.
