Mountain hikes Gletschersteig (Glacier trail)

Description

The starting point for this panoramic hike is the parking lot of the Pitztal Glacier Lift. After taking the Glacier Express, the Wildspitzbahn takes you up to 3,440 m above sea level. From the highest café in Tyrol, you can enjoy a stunning view of the Wildspitze, the highest peak in Tyrol. The wonderful ambience of the café is ideal for gathering your strength before the tour and enjoying the view.
 
The entrance to the Pitztal Glacier Trail is located approx. 200 meters from the Wildspitzbahn cable car and initially leads over a ridge, with artificial footholds providing more safety. After overcoming the ridge, you reach a flat area with a small lake. From here you walk downhill along the lateral moraine. Shortly before the Taschachferner glacier, there is a steep step to overcome, which has been renovated with step aids.

Due to the decline of the Taschachferner, you cross the glacier stream via an approx. 50-metre-long suspension bridge completed in 2022. After crossing the bridge, you reach the Rimlsteig trail below the Urkundkopf, which leads directly to the Taschachhaus at 2,434 m. A refreshment stop at the Taschachhaus is recommended, as you have a 2 km descent to the material cable car and a 7 km forest trail to Mandarfen ahead of you. Alternatively, you can take advantage of the “Bike&Hike” offer from the material cable car and cover the remaining kilometers comfortably on a reserved mountain bike down to the valley. As the Pitztal Glacier Trail is a black, partly red mountain trail, alpine experience is recommended.
