The hut was named after the mountaineering pioneer Hermann von Barth - and you really do feel a bit like a pioneer up here, the Hornbach range high above the Lechtal is so lonely and rugged. The Hermann-von-Barth-Hütte has a long tradition as a starting point for extensive climbing tours. Over 50 renovated routes can be found nearby. If you don't like climbing, you can enjoy the view over the Lechtal valley from the sun terrace.
The first ascent is on a marked trail that leads through sparse forest and over a secured rock passage. After crossing the Balschtebach stream, the path winds steeply up to the hut in serpentines. If you want to see how the climbers scramble through the rocks without having to put on a harness yourself, you should take the marked route up to the Plattenspitze (2,488 m).
From the open-air stage, walk uphill past the Ölberg Chapel on an initially asphalted road. After a few hairpin bends you have reached the Kasermandl snack station (1412m, 45 min). Head northwest on a road to the valley station of the material cable car. Now head uphill on the orographic left side of the Balschtebach stream on a marked trail through sparse forest (a secured rock passage) until you cross the stream. Follow a somewhat rough, winding path uphill to the hut.
