All roads lead to Rome. Well, this one actually leads to Venice. But today we are only tackling a small section of the "Via Claudia Augusta", the Romans' only state road across the Alps. A beautiful section with mountains, fields and the emerald-green Fernsteinsee lake.
This scenic and fairly flat circular tour along the old Roman road Via Claudia Augusta starts in the center of Imst. It leads in two easy climbs across the Gurgltal fields, through shady forest to Nassereith and through to the Fernsteinsee nature reserve.
Imst centre, along the Via Claudia Augusta cycle path to the Gurgltal valley, Tarrenz, Strad, continue in the shady forest to Nassereith. The valley now becomes narrower and somewhat steeper. Through the castle arch of the Hotel Schloss Fernsteinsee , viewing point with a view of the emerald-green Lake Fernsteinsee.
Return at the campsite through the forest in the direction of Rastland - St. Wendelin - Brunnwald - Nassereith - Gurgltal Cycle Path - Imst.
Alternative: Nassereither Alm (Muthenau Alm 1,739m) from Lake Fernsteinsee via the Via Claudia Augusta to the Fernpasshöhe and on to the Nassereither Alm (Muthenau Alm).
