Cross-country skiing in Seefeld

Topographically speaking, the area between Seefeld, Leutasch, Mösern-Buchen, Reith and Scharnitz is ideal for cross-country skiing. It is no coincidence that the Seefeld region was the venue for the 52nd Nordic World Ski Championships in February 2019.

The Seefeld high plateau lies between the Karwendel massif, Wetterstein mountains and Inntal valley at an altitude of around 1,200 metres. There is an extensive network of cross-country ski trails of varying degrees of difficulty with a total length of more than 245 kilometres and guaranteed snow. Day, multi-day or annual tickets are available for use of the cross-country ski trails. It is no coincidence that Seefeld has already hosted the Nordic disciplines at the Winter Olympics three times - in 1964, 1976 and at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games. 2019 saw the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships take place in Seefeld for the second time since 1985.

Top international athletes and numerous national teams regularly train at the Nordic Competence Centre with its biathlon facility. Holidaymakers also benefit from this professional infrastructure. In the Cross Country Academy, for example, beginners and advanced skiers can try their hand at biathlon several times a week between December and March.

In the Seefeld region, there is the Katzenkopf circuit, a cross-country ski trail whose starting point already offers a magnificent mountain panorama at a considerable altitude. From Leutasch, you can comfortably take the mountain railway to the Katzenkopfhütte. At an altitude of 1,360 metres, there is a fantastic view of the Wetterstein and Karwendel mountains. Inspired by this view, the difficult Katzenkopf circuit can now begin. The trail winds for 21 kilometres through snow-covered forests, past the Wildmoossee and Lottensee lakes and down into the Leutasch Valley. Skating is also possible from the Wildmoosalm. The Wildmoos loop, which leads from Seefeld across the idyllic snow-covered Wildmoos plateau, is also particularly scenic.

There is no shortage of places to stop for refreshments in the Seefeld region. One of the many inns where tired cross-country skiers can recharge their batteries is the rustic Ropferstub'm in Buchen. This traditional inn above Telfs serves Tyrolean dishes made mostly from regional ingredients. It can be reached, for example, via the Katzenlochloipe, a 6.7-kilometre circular tour at the foot of the Hohe Munde.

In addition to a wide range of specialised accommodation - from cosy, family-run guesthouses to exclusive hotels - cross-country skiers are well catered for at the Hotel zum Gourmet in Seefeld: many cross-country trail entrances are located in the immediate vicinity of the accommodation. If the main access point is a little further away, a free hotel shuttle can also be used. The cross-country ski ticket is also included in the room price. In the evenings, guests can either relax in the wellness area or chat to like-minded people about their experiences on Seefeld's cross-country ski trails at the occasional cross-country skiing get-together at the hotel.
