Sport climbing routes are no higher than 25-30 metres, so a long rope is sufficient for climbing and lowering. In alpine climbing, the term multi-pitch is usually used. This involves climbing a route with several pitches, with belays set up along the way and sometimes rappelling at the end.
The most common climbing scales in this country are the UIAA scale (e.g. 7-; mainly used in European sport climbing areas) and the French scale (e.g. 6a+; used in international sport climbing areas, France and mostly in Tirol). Anyone climbing in Tirol should therefore familiarise themselves with the French scale and, if necessary, have a conversion table to hand, because from the medium difficulty range onwards, the two scales diverge significantly.
There are numerous sport climbing areas in Tirol with routes in all levels of difficulty. These regions are particularly suitable for climbing. Climbers Paradise provides free topos and information about the climbing areas for almost all climbing regions.
In addition to a climbing harness, belay device and rope, rock climbing equipment also includes quickdraws, extra screw carabiners and, of course, a helmet. You can find a comprehensive packing list for beginners hier. If you are climbing outdoors, you should not only have perfectly functioning safety equipment but also know how to use the rope and tie a variety of important knots.
Climbing routes for beginners and family-friendly climbing areas with numerous routes rated 3 to 5 can be found here.
The route Silence in Flatanger, Norway, is still rated as the most difficult climbing route in the world at 9c. It was first climbed by Adam Ondra in 2017. There are only two other routes in the world rated at this level. Most recently, Jakob Schubert from Tirol climbed a 9c in the same area.
