Climbing

Climbing equipment

Climbing outside is wonderful. Sunshine. Rocks under your hands. Nice people at the other end of the rope. But before you set off, make sure you have the right climbing equipment.

In addition to the equipment, a climbing course is a must for inexperienced climbers. After all, anyone who climbs exposes themselves to risks and a potential for injury that should not be underestimated. Climbing courses offered by the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV), for example, teach you how to use the equipment correctly and the right safety technique.

Basic equipment for climbing

What belongs in a climbing rucksack? Here is a brief overview of the climbing equipment needed for climbing gardens or in the gym.

Climbing shoes | slicks

Yes, they really do exist. Those superhumans who squeeze their feet into slicks that are three to four shoe sizes too small. Nevertheless, more and more manufacturers are asking their customers to buy shoes in their street shoe size. Beginners in particular should definitely buy more comfortable climbing shoes that can be used both indoors and on the rocks.

Belay device

Only autotubers or semi-automatic belay devices should be used here, such as a Smart or a Grigri - and in any case a familiar one. The Austrian Alpine Club, for example, has compiled an overview of the use of belay devices for sport climbing.

Climbing harness

The climbing harness, which is usually a harness for sport climbing, is best bought from a specialist shop - after all, the harness should be comfortable and not cut in.

It is also recommended that you obtain the following:

  • Quickdraws and carabiners: at least 10 pieces, screw carabiners at least 2 pieces (only for rock climbing)
  • Rope (and rope bag): A single rope is used for use in the climbing gym or climbing garden. The diameter here is usually between 8.9 and 11 millimetres with a rope length of between 50-70m
  • Helmet: for outdoor use in the climbing garden
  • Chalk bag/magnesium bag: a magnesium bag is placed on your hip to prevent your hands from getting wet with anticipation and for increased friction
