On a walk through Innsbruck, it quickly becomes clear that many things are different here. With skis in your arms on a bike to the mountain? Not an unusual sight. Wearing sports gear to the pub for dinner? Probably not noticeable at all. And wearing jogging trousers in Innsbruck doesn't usually mean that you've lost control of your life, but that you're on your way to a sporting activity. And you've probably stocked up in one of the following shops:
Matador is the place to go if you want to be both functional and stylish on the piste or the mountain. Very centrally located in Anichstraße, somewhat confusing, but with the best advice and brands that you rarely find. The place to shop for bikers and freeriders!
This specialist in mountain sports, skiing and ski touring is located a little off the beaten track in Andreas-Hofer-Straße, but is well worth the diversions. The advice is excellent - very often from the owner himself! In addition, Sport Wolf is the only retailer in Innsbruck that is certified for the common good, which means, among other things, that it favours sustainable and fair goods.
Sport Gramshammer is located on Innsbruck's Landhausplatz and has long since established itself among the Innsbruck population with its strong focus on mountain and outdoor sports. From sports equipment to rucksacks and gloves, you can find more here than the small shop would suggest.
Everyone in Innsbruck knows where Sport Spezial is located - after all, it is not only one of the oldest sports shops in the city, but also one of the best thanks to its excellent selection and advice! Sport Spezial is unbeatable, especially when it comes to water sports, tennis and cross-country skiing. You just have to find it first - it is inconspicuously located next to the university bridge and can easily be mistaken for a residential building.
The Boerse, near Innsbruck's Triumphpforte, has been an institution when it comes to trend sports since 1980. You can not only buy trendy bikes, boards and skis here, but also hire them. However, I would particularly like to emphasise the repair service: the Boerse workshop team has already made many a piece of worn-out sports equipment fit for the mountains again.
The XDouble is undoubtedly one of the coolest shops in Innsbruck - skaters and snowboarders in particular will find everything they need for their sport and style here. You can also get hold of limited-edition products from well-known brands, as well as beautiful items from small Tyrolean street labels, and stock up on unusual magazines at XDouble. And if you've fallen in love with a skateboard but can't ride it yet, you can find all the information about the next skate workshop directly in the shop.
You don't pass Bike Point by chance - you go there on purpose. The small shop is located in Innsbruck's Pradl district, far off the beaten track. Nevertheless, the Bike Point is not an insider tip in the cycling community, as the quality, service and expertise are so concentrated here that they are known throughout Innsbruck.
Dust Bikes only sells mountain bikes that the owners would ride themselves. The small shop specialises primarily in mountain bikes and enduro bikes and, in addition to complete bikes, also offers customised bike builds and a comprehensive repair service. In addition to a large selection of components, there is also a small section with outfits - but above all two experts who live their passion for biking.
Podio translates as "winner's podium" and this shop on the outskirts of Innsbruck is dedicated to everything to do with first-class single-track sports equipment: From children's bikes to mountain bike fullies and racing bikes, you will find the right two-wheeler for every road surface here, including with an electric motor on request. In addition to comprehensive advice, the Podio Bikes team also offers various services such as bike fitting, bike sizing and repairs.
The chick among my recommendations only opened in December 2022 and is already scoring points in the climbing community with its wide range of hardware. After all, owner Gerhard Schaar is an experienced climber himself and knows the special procurement needs of his target group inside out: bolting.eu offers a wide range of products that enable both beginners and advanced climbers - from via ferrata to expeditions - to get started in this sport. If you can't make it to the shop during opening hours, you can browse through the online shop, get advice from Schaar via chat and then pick up your purchase from the collection box.
There isn't much space to take a leisurely look around the Rückenwind running shoe shop in Defereggerstraße. But there doesn't need to be, because here the running test comes before the fitting: foot type, running style and axis of movement are precisely analysed by the consultants and compared with the planned area of use. Only then are you presented with a selection of running shoes that really fit. Incidentally, this also works for problem feet!
The fact that Innsbruck can confidently be described as a sports capital is also reflected in the number of brand stores that have set up shop here. First and foremost, of course, is Burton, which has not only opened a flagship store and a smaller branch in the city centre, but has also set up its European headquarters in Innsbruck. Patagonia has its only brand store in Austria in Innsbruck's Maria-Theresienstraße, with a Black Diamond branch right next door. Also to be found in the centre of Innsbruck: Maloja (Andreas-Hofer-Straße), Odlo (Rathausgalerien Anichstraße), Mammut and Schöffel-Lowa (both Wilhelm-Greil-Straße). Just outside Innsbruck city centre, you will find Skinfit functional clothing on Kranebitter Allee.
In addition to the numerous specialist shops and brand stores, Innsbruck also has several multi-storey sports department stores. The Sportler flagship store, Blue Tomato and Sport Okay can be found in the centre. The Intersport Megastore, a Gigasport and the Sportler are located in the east of Innsbruck. For a city with just 130,000 inhabitants, quite an impressive density!
